I recently increased my mileage and I've been having a lot of pain in my upper neck after longer runs (4+miles). I originally thought this was due to tension in the shoulders and neck, but after focusing on relaxing during runs I still have the pain. Can running too upright cause the neck pain?
The Balanced Runner
It's hard to know what's going on without seeing you, but running too upright could be one possibility. The kissing the air trick should help if that's the case. Make sure you're not pulling your shoulders back or down either, take a look at my other videos in this series for more about what to do with your shoulders. Good luck!

Gordon (celeb)
What's the reason for wanting to lean forward while running? Seems like this tip would help me reach that posture, but why does that posture help?
The Balanced Runner
Gordon, thanks for your question. We are putting together a more comprehensive series of lessons so we can address things in-depth. Meanwhile, there are several answers to your question. First, running is essentially jumping - you have to go up to have a moment when neither foot is on the ground. To do that efficiently you need to put your whole body on the line of thrust from your foot so the force goes through your skeleton to your head. That means leaning from your ankles. (continued....)
The Balanced Runner
The second reason is that running is initiated by falling forward, so leaning from your ankles initiates and maintains that fall. This allows you to use gravity for propulsion and makes running feel much easier.
The Balanced Runner
The third reason is that leaning forward properly, with a healthy counterrotation in your torso, releases your weight from your feet towards toe-off, reducing the stress on your feet and calves.
The Balanced Runner
Hope that clarifies things. Write again with any other questions, I'll get right back to you with answers.
