Great material! This got me wondering why we change the oil in the first place :-)

As oil combines with combustion gasses, it becomes acidic. Sulfuric and Carbonic acid form and begin to eat away at the metal parts. There's also some particulate matter that gets suspended in the oil as well. Some gets trapped by the filter, some doesn't. The oil also breaks down over time. I hope that answers your question.
