I learned so much here! I do wonder if I've grasped what "rendering" really means. I assume it's a phase of application for the interface.

Hi Kari!, Rendering is simply the term we use for the part when your computer rewrites the video to show you your effects or transitions easily. Essentially FCP X takes the title, or the transition and makes its own video to show you. The computer is processing the visuals you have created, (like a new graphic title) and making a file that is easier for it to reference as it is played back. So an un-rendered section will not playback as smoothly as something that has been rendered.
