Why was the king executed? Was it because he refused to give up enough of this power?

The king still was a threat to the revolution. De facto, he had no power anymore. However, he still wanted to resume power. Furthermore, you can understand the execution of the French king as an early start of the reign of terror which most historians date a bit later. The revolutionaries became more and more extreme in their views and actions. Cheers, H
