OMG no wonder my pieces were falling apart! I bake for 15 minutes per half inch as directed. I will be for a full hour from now on!
Cindy Lietz
Great! I'm glad the info was helpful!

Very interesting. What happens if you bake more than ten minutes but less than a full hour? ( like 30 minutes ). Doesn't it matter if the clay is thicker or thinner?
Cindy Lietz
The thing is it takes a good 30 or more, even if the piece is thin, to 'melt' the plastics in the clay to cure it. Most ovens heat up and cool down, so baking for an hour insures it has been hot for long enough to cure. If the piece is super thick (1/2"+) then I bake even longer.

I noticed that the clay baked for 10mins had a rough crumbly edge unlike the other piece which is a nice straight edge. Is it possible that this was another factor in the fragility?
Cindy Lietz
Hi Jennifer, those samples were all cut from the same sheet, so the fact that the one had a crumbled looking edge made no difference to the strength of the clay. If both pieces had been baked for the same amount of time, they would have ended up with the same strength, regardless of what the edge looked like. It was a good question though. It shows that you are trying to think for yourself and reason through the possibilities of why the clay behaved a certain way. Good on you for that! :)

Thanks Cindy for a great class on baking polymer clay. This is one of the questions I have had and the directions on the clay itself is not clear either.
Cindy Lietz
Yeah, you'd think that the clay companies would have decent baking instructions but none of them seem to. I guess that is where we come in. ;)

Hi Linda L B, I don't have any control over how the video player works. That would be a good question to ask Curious yourself. There is a button at the bottom of every page, called 'Support' where you can ask questions. I hope you get an answer from them on this really soon. Thanks for commenting!
