I usually start the draining process first and give it a while to drain (30 min) then change the filter. You can be adding the oil while you are changing your air filter. You don't always have to change the air filter when it looks dirty. If you hold it up to daylight and you can still see light coming through it then put it back in again till the next oil change. When changing the air filter it is a good idea to take a damp cloth and wipe out the inside of the air filter housing.
