Hi, as a rule I always put “please” and “thank you “ in every email (when applicable) regardless of power distance,simply because it’s good manners. Now I’m worried that I may be striking too much of a submissive tone if I am communicating this way with peers or when I’m the authority. Your thoughts? Obviously I don’t want to undermine myself in the workplace. Thank you!

Hey Brian, I think you can be polite and maintain your authority at the same time. Obviously, it's a bit tough to say without seeing the specific situations, but something like "Please call the supplier" is polite and maintains the authority. Something like "Would you mind calling the supplier" is polite but less authoritative.
