I did this with my summer camp kids just as a fun project, and it was great. But I'm going to be a 4th grade teacher in the fall, and I would love to do this project with a classroom. Are you aware of any lesson plans/writing activities that could accompany this activity? I think there may be some 4th grade NGSS standards that relate to energy. Thanks for posting this great project!

Ian, I am glad this project worked well for you camp. I am not aware of any lessons plans or activities that correlate with this project. You could have students design experiments based on varying the angle of the launch. They would need a way to consistently stomp on the rocket each time. That might be tricky...but maybe they could drop a heavy book or weight on it each time. Then they could report on their results to the class. Feel free to email me if you need more ideas:)

How big is the little block you screwed the PVC pipe too? Does it make a big difference what size it is? Or could I just any random piece of wood?
Stoked About Science
I used a block that was 2in x 2in x 12 in, but you really could use anything. It just needs to be stable and heavy enough to hold it down.

Thanks. I just used some wood blocks I had lying around. I did this with some summer camp kids and they loved it. The rockets went really far!
