I would really appreciate more information. Specifically, but not solely, I am interested in whether there is any evidence that Mormons attempted to coexist peacefully with Native Americans at a later period (once they no longer feared attack). Although I'm not very knowledgable about the Mormon religion, I am curious as to whether they attempted to proselytize Native Americans or conversely did they respect the N. A.s own religious beliefs as valid.for them? Thank you.

I am not an expert on the Mormon religion by any means but here is what I have gathered from a bit of research. The Mormons settled in the Great Basin without realizing that the resources that were there were already being used by the Ute tribe. At first the Mormons were committed to being peaceful with the natives. The Mormons saw the Native Americans as one of the tribes of Israel that had wondered to North America. They needed to hear the message of Christ in order to be saved.

Here is some info from: http://www.onlinenevada.org/articles/mormons-and-native-americans-historical-overview According to Smith, when he found and translated the plates, they told of a lost tribe of Israel that migrated to the Americas many hundreds of years ago. These first Americans built a flourishing and advanced civilization, but one branch, the Lamanites, killed their righteous relatives, the Nephites. For this and their rejection of Christ's teachings, God cursed the Lamanites with...

dark skin and a degraded existence. The story maintained that the Lamanites would not regain white skin and a civilized way of life until they accepted Christ's teachings. Thus, the heavenly beings instructed Smith not only to restore the true Christian church, but also to bring salvation to Native Americans. Ultimately the clash over resources would lead to violence between these two groups with the Mormons being eventually victorious in controlling the area and resources. Hope this helps.

I found this quite interesting although it seems to me that the relationship betwwen Mormons going west and Manifest Destiny was different than the relationship between manifest destiny and the 49ers and farmers.
History with Mr. Striplin
I see your point about how the Mormon's relationship to Manifest Destiny appears to be different because of their motivation to go west being escaping persecution. In reality though Manifest Destiny was really just a way to justify the taking of land and resources from the people who were already living in the west (Native Americans). Like all groups going west the Mormons would come into conflict with the tribes of the Great Basin. When church leaders saw no other choice they authorized...

Attacks on the Natives with the justification that "by resisting us the Natives are rejecting Christ's messages". In reality this is just another way of claiming Manifest Destiny. They were saying that they were sent by God and if the Natives choose to reject that they can do nothing about it. I hope this makes sense. If you would like more info just let me know.
