Did Mao willingly resign from daily politics after the cultural revolution? Or was he pushed out?
Hendrik Godbersen
Mao was not pushed out after the Cultural Revolution. Mao died and, to some degree, it could be said that the Cultural Revolution could only end because Mao was dead. However, Mao withdrew from daily politics after the failure of the Great Leap Forward, which happened early. From my point of view, he was not so much pushed out but "disappointed" with the development on the operational level. On a strategic level Mao was still untouchable during the Cultural Revolution. Cheers, Hendrik
