I've been taking suzuki lessons since I was 5 years old (now I'm 16). I actually started on the violin, but switched to the viola in like 2nd grade. I now own a full sized 16 inch viola. My viola cost at least $6000, and my bow was around $400. I mean it is a really nice instrument and it's the instrument I'll be playing on for the rest of my life hopefully. But if you actually want a good quality instrument that will have a good tone, I don't think $150 or even $1000 is gonna cut it.
Teton Music
That's a good point. You can make a decent sound with a poorer quality instrument, but it's going to have a poorer sound. If a musician decides to stick with it, then trading up to something better is very important.
