I am afraid my drain will need more than a cosmetic change. It is over twenty years old, and corroded. Thanks, I did learn about the plumber's tool here, so will get that as I begin the task. Thank you.

Changing the complete assembly is a much more challenging task, usually requiring access either underneath the tub or through the wall behind it. If your tub drain isn't leaking but you fear a huge struggle removing the finished components due to corrosion, consider a drop-in stopper replacement, commonly available online. Simply remove your existing stopper, place a bead of epoxy sealant around the flange, and set the new stopper assembly right on top of the old one, and voila! Best of luck!
