Pandemic makes social justice issues more personal for this young Florida voter

3 CQ

Yaneilys Ayuso, who will vote for the first time in November, has spent much of the last year trying to encourage Florida youth to get involved in politics. Now, Ayuso's efforts are on hold as the city of Miami — and much of the country — is under lockdown. Produced by: Alejandra Martinez. Image credit: Courtesy of Yaneilys Ayuso.

I supported Bernie both campaigns yet it frustrates me to no end that the interviewee said she would not be voting even Bernie didn’t get the nomination. Is the de facto two party system broken? Yes. Unfortunately not voting isn’t taking an active role in this Republic’s democracy since anarchy - or at least a reset to engage more votes like Rank Choice Voting (RCV) - isn’t an option, currently. Not voting passively allows the status quo to continue. If parties actually took non votes as signals

(Continued from post) then they wouldn’t have gotten into the messes they are currently in, while barely providing space for the essentially irrelevant alternative parties’ platforms. The easiest thing to do to engage is to vote, and not just in presidential campaigns but from local up. I hope this young voter gains some wisdom in short order otherwise I feel they, and others like them, will be sorely disappointed over the next 4 years.
