Why is I lost, "ho perso" instead of "io perso"

Ahh, now you get into the grammar a little deeper :-) I "lost" is past tense which is why it requires the "ho."

"che succede" can be used as what's the matter OR what's going on. Is the 'whats going on' used only in a situation where you are concerned or worried or can it be used casually as in, "Hey, what's going on" when you run into friends?

Che succede is mostly used in a situation where you are concerned or in a phrase like "What's going on with Italy" (Che succede con l'Italia?) If you want to say "Hey, what's going on" with friends, you can say "Come va?" (which literally means How goes it). Hope this helps!
