What happens if you are in a relationship with someone who’s rewarding you intermittently but it’s not someone you can just cut off from your life, like your mother or aunt? What’s the solution then?
Jody Andrews, LMFT
Tough stuff. I usually suggest something called "ritualized cutoff" where you set a limit or boundary on your time and expectations such as visiting only on holidays or special occasions, limiting the amount of contact to relatively short periods of time and adjusting your own expectations to realizing they may only be capable of giving intermittently. It is like weaning your self off of the "addictive device" . . . Hope that helps!

Definitely see that I'm in an addictive wishful thinking relationship... I hate it and hate how I feel... but sometimes after days of him ignoring me, out drinking with others, he comes home and treats me so sweet.... ): I try to leave, but I can't
Jody Andrews, LMFT
Sigh, that is the difficulty with these kind of relationships. You get just enough to keep going. When you are ready to leave, you will know. In the meantime take care of yourself!
