After looking over the rest ofd the round piece of wood, the part of this piece that is not perfect,has a natural grain effect in it. Why wouldn't you want to leave the natural grain effect on this piece of wood?

First, I'm sorry I haven't replied before now. I missed your question. Now, the decision to apply the color where I did was just to try to accent the wood to fit the look I was after. How and where to do such work is the decision of the artist, and you may decide for a different look. After a piece is done you always see several other ways you could have gone. Thanks for your observation.
