Sometimes I find, when I count my stitches after knitting a few rows, that I have one or two extra stitches in the row. How might this be happening and how do I fix it?

Janet, is this something that happens when knitting plain stockinette stitch or a more complex stitch that involves increases or decreases (like a lace or brioche stitch).
