I have a 12" deep over the fridge cabinet and want to bring it out 12" more inches. These are bare Oak Cabinets fully assembled, not knock downs. There is a 12" deep wall cabinet on one side and a 18" deep cabinet on the other side of the fridge. How do I frame for the over the fridge cabinet?

Hi Bobby, I think you should make a box out of 9/16 or 3/4" plywood for added strength. make the box the exact width as the box on the refrigerator refrigerator cabinet, but make the depth 11 15/16" deep. This will keep the side by the 12" deep cabinet from exposing the plywood frame. If you are going to paint the cabinets then you can make it 12" deep, because you can caulk and paint the seam. Screw the plywood box to the back wall and the 2 side cabinets. attach your ref. cabinet.

Great insight. I have modular cabinets that I want to do this with. It seems simple to separate the face from the box, but I hesitate from fear of Murphy's Law. Still, I would like to know where to get good wood from that isn't warped or too expensive. I plan on painting the cabinets to ensure they are more water resistant than the cheap finish they came with.

Hi George, If you are planning on painting your cabinets, then you can go to your local lumber yard or even on of the large home improvement stores. You will want a/c plywood . This wood will have a fine finish that can be lightly sanded for a great painted finish.
